Day 3 — Hearing the Shepherd's Voice

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (NIV)

One of the greatest privileges of being a disciple is knowing that Jesus still speaks to His people. He is not a distant Savior who simply gave us His Word and left us to figure life out on our own. He is our Good Shepherd, and a shepherd leads his sheep.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

Notice the order. First, they listen. Then, they follow.

Discipleship is not simply learning about Jesus. It is learning to walk with Him day by day, listening to His direction and responding with obedience.

Many believers wonder, how do I know if God is speaking to me?

That is an honest question. The good news is that recognizing God's voice is not reserved for pastors, missionaries, or spiritual giants. Every believer can grow in discerning the voice of the Shepherd.

Just as a child learns to recognize the voice of a loving parent, we learn to recognize Jesus as we spend time with Him. The more familiar we become with Him, the more easily we recognize when He is leading us.

The primary way God speaks is through Scripture. The Bible is not merely a collection of stories or wise sayings. It is God's living and active Word, revealing His character, His heart, His promises, and His will.

As you read the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit brings them to life. A verse you may have read many times suddenly speaks directly into your current situation. A passage brings conviction, comfort, wisdom, or encouragement exactly when you need it. This is one reason daily time in God's Word is so important. If we want to recognize God's voice, we must become familiar with what He has already said. God will never lead us in a way that contradicts His written Word. His Spirit and His Word always agree.

While Scripture is our foundation, the Holy Spirit also leads us in our daily lives. Sometimes He prompts us to encourage someone. Sometimes He reminds us of a verse we need. Sometimes He gives us wisdom before we decide and sometimes, He quietly convicts us when our attitude, words, or actions are not reflecting Christ.

Often His voice is not loud or dramatic but like a gentle prompting that draws us toward Jesus. The Holy Spirit never manipulates through fear or confusion. He leads with truth, conviction, peace, and love. Learning to recognize those promptings takes practice and the more quickly we respond in obedience, the more sensitive our hearts become to His leading.

One reason many people struggle to hear God's voice is not because He has stopped speaking. It is because life has become so noisy. Our minds are constantly filled with notifications, conversations, entertainment, responsibilities, and endless opinions and without realizing it, we can spend hours listening to everyone else while giving only a few quiet moments to the One who knows us best.

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray and if the Son of God intentionally made space to be with the Father, how much more do we need quiet moments with Him?

Sometimes hearing God simply begins by slowing down, turning off the distractions, opening His Word, praying, listening and waiting.

God is rarely in a hurry, and disciples learn not to rush His presence.

Not every thought that enters our minds comes from God. That is why Scripture calls us to test what we hear.

Ask yourself:

• Does this agree with God's Word?
• Does it reflect the character of Jesus?
• Will it produce the fruit of the Spirit?
• Does it lead me toward obedience and love?

God never contradicts Himself, and He will never lead us into sin, pride, bitterness, or fear.

The Shepherd's voice always draws us closer to Him.

Hearing God's voice is not the final goal. Following Him is.

Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice… and they follow me."

The purpose of hearing is obedience. Every time we choose to follow His leading, our trust grows deeper and every act of obedience strengthens our relationship with Him.

Little by little, we begin to recognize His voice more clearly because we are walking closely with the One who is speaking.

That is the beautiful rhythm of discipleship, we seek Him first, we hear His voice and we follow where He leads.

Today, set aside at least fifteen uninterrupted minutes with God.

Begin by asking: "Lord, speak to me through Your Word today."

Read John 10 slowly.

As you read, notice any verse that stands out to you and write it down.

Ask the Holy Spirit what He wants to teach you through it. Then, throughout the day, pay attention to the gentle promptings that align with Scripture.

If God places someone on your heart to encourage, do it.

If He convicts you to change your attitude or actions, respond quickly.

Practice listening—and then following.

When I need direction, whose voice do I tend to listen to first?

How consistent am I in spending time in God's Word?

Are there distractions that make it difficult for me to hear from God?

What is one step I can take this week to create more space to listen to the Lord?

I belong to the Good Shepherd. I know His voice because I spend time with Him through His Word and His Spirit. As I seek Him first, He faithfully leads me, and I will follow wherever He calls me.
