Day 4 — Do What He Says

"Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." — James 1:22 (NIV)

Jesus never intended for His followers to simply collect knowledge about Him but he called them to follow Him.

Throughout the Gospels, the disciples spent countless hours listening to Jesus teach. They heard the Sermon on the Mount. They watched Him heal the sick, calm storms, cast out demons, and show compassion to people everyone else overlooked.

But Jesus was never interested in producing listeners alone. He was raising disciples. A disciple is someone whose life is transformed because they not only hear the words of Jesus—they live them.

James writes, "But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

Those are strong words. James reminds us that it is possible to know God's truth without allowing it to change us. We can read our Bible every day, attend church faithfully, listen to excellent teaching, and even memorize Scripture, yet still resist the very things God is asking us to do.

Knowledge is valuable but knowledge without obedience produces little spiritual growth.

Jesus is not simply inviting us to learn more. He is inviting us to become more like Him. Every time we obey what He has shown us, His truth moves from our minds into our hearts and begins shaping the way we live.

At the heart of every act of obedience is trust. When God asks us to forgive someone who hurt us, He is asking us to trust His justice. When He tells us not to worry, He invites us to trust His provision and when He calls us to love difficult people, He teaches us to trust His wisdom over our emotions. When He asks us to wait, He is asking us to believe that His timing is better than ours. Obedience is rarely about whether we understand everything. It is about whether we believe the One who is leading us. The disciples often did not understand why Jesus asked them to do certain things.

Peter probably didn't understand why Jesus told him to cast his nets after fishing all night. The servants at the wedding didn't understand why they were filling jars with water and the blind man surely wondered why Jesus placed mud on his eyes. Understanding came after obedience.

The same is often true in our own lives.

Faith is more than agreeing with biblical truth. Faith takes a step. For instance, Noah built an ark before he saw rain. Abraham left his homeland before he knew his destination. Joshua marched around Jericho before the walls fell. Peter stepped out of the boat before he discovered the water would hold him.

Their obedience was not perfect because they understood everything. It was possible because they trusted the God who spoke and our lives are no different. Sometimes obedience looks dramatic. Often, it looks beautifully ordinary. Such as, choosing honesty when dishonesty would be easier. Speaking words that build others up. Refusing to participate in gossip. Forgiving when pride wants revenge. Keeping your promises or showing kindness to someone who cannot repay you. Like, praying for someone who hurt you or serving without needing recognition.

These everyday decisions may seem small, but they shape our character far more than the occasional extraordinary moment.

Discipleship is built one obedient step at a time.

There will be moments when following Jesus stretches your comfort. Sometimes He asks you to let go of something you've held tightly. Sometimes He asks you to wait when you want to move and sometimes, He asks you to move when you would rather stay comfortable.

Obedience does not mean life will always become easier, but it does mean you will never walk alone.

The same Jesus who calls you to follow Him also gives you the grace to obey Him. His Holy Spirit strengthens you, reminds you of His Word, and gives you courage when your own strength is not enough.

God has never asked His children to obey Him by their own power. He walks with us every step of the way.

There is a beautiful freedom that comes from a heart that has learned to say, "Yes, Lord." Not because every answer is easy. Not because every instruction makes immediate sense but because we have come to know the One who is speaking.

Every act of obedience deepens our relationship with Jesus, and every step of faith increases our confidence in His faithfulness. Every surrendered "yes" shapes us to look a little more like Christ.

This is the life of a disciple, not perfection, not performance but simply learning, day after day, to trust Jesus enough to do what He says.

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one area where He has already spoken to you. Maybe there is someone you need to forgive or a conversation you've been avoiding. A step of faith you've delayed or a habit He has been asking you to surrender. Don't focus on everything at once.

Choose one step and then take it today.

Remember, God is far more interested in a willing heart than in impressive accomplishments. Small acts of obedience, repeated over time, become a life that reflects Christ.

I trust my Savior, and I choose to obey His voice. My faith is demonstrated through my actions, and every step of obedience draws me closer to Jesus. I will follow Him with a willing heart, knowing that His ways lead to life.
